BVD Free - Midway Memo

Author: Carolyn Gates

The past 18 months have been an exciting journey as we continue to work towards presenting the business case for BVD eradication in July 2019 and developing the resources needed to support industry with the long-term management of this economically important disease by the end of the BVD Free research programme in July 2020.

We are immensely grateful to all of the farmers, veterinarians, and industry stakeholders who have engaged with the project so far enabling us to learn more about the current BVD situation in New Zealand and what we can do to more cost-effectively manage the disease. BVD is clearly affecting beef and dairy farmers across the country, but the good news is there are many small steps we can already take to reduce the impact BVD is having on New Zealand farm businesses.

While there are still several field studies yet to be completed, we would like to take this opportunity to share with you the preliminary findings from our year 1 research studies.  You can download a copy of the report by clicking on the image below.

We also want to ask for your additional support to help us fill in the remaining knowledge gaps surrounding the cost-effectiveness of different BVD management strategies under different farming conditions. Check out the ‘Getting Involved’ page for more details on competing in the BVD Free Challenge 2019.

As always, we would love to hear from you if there is anything else we can do to support your ongoing efforts to make New Zealand BVD Free.
